Philibert Gakwenzire holds a PhD in History, History of Art and Archeology obtained from the ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles), in Belgium in January 2017. Since January 2019, he is a Senior Lecturer-Researcher at the University of Rwanda-College of Education. Previously, he was at the University of Kibungo (UNIK) from 2006 For his current research, he deepens several themes from his thesis. In 2019, he was awarded the Atlas scholarship supported by IFRA (French Institute for Research in Africa and FMSH (Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Foundation) to carry out his postdoctoral research at the University of Nanterre in Paris where he stayed from September to December 2019. In the same vein, Philibert Gakwenzire obtained a postdoctoral grant from ARES (Academy for Research and Higher Education) for research he conducted from January to July 2023 at ULB. His research projects focus on colonial elite who participated in the process of granting independence to the Territory of Rwanda. He is particularly interested on their memoirs. Almost all his publications, studies and lectures are about the genocide against the Tutsi. Apart from the academic and scientific responsibilities, he is engaged in servicing the community in whole. It is in this regard, he is President of IBUKA, an organization created by and with survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
